The ball of the foot and toes are supplied by nerves that pass between the bones in the midfoot. If these nerves are irritated, for instance by a loss of the natural transverse arch of the foot or improper footwear, the nerves can swell and misfire. Classically between the second and third toe, it can happen between any and needs the vicious cycle of being inflamed, swelling and misfiring to be stopped.
